Ugh. Backgrounds. It’s always been something I’ve considered a weakness in my work and because of that, I tend to favour illustrations that don’t focus too much on the environment.

Does the scene look boring? Add a diagonal shadow and it’s way more dynamic.

But that changes this year. Since I’ve recovered from my Christmas pneumonia, I can now say that one of my New Years resolutions will be to get better at backgrounds and to actually take a good look at how to not only improve but to also change my attitude towards them.

I think it's important to show more behind the scenes to break down those false impressions of the dreamy illustrator life. Projects often involve a lot of back and forth to progress an idea, which is excellent. But it's a shame that many ideas never see the light of day. For example, these were my initial ideas for The Guardian's article on 'How a nemesis can make you more successful'. There is a part of me that wished for the second idea, but that's the way it is, I guess.

After hours of ink preparation, the first layer of a special screen printed poster is done. There were many mishaps where I hadn’t flooded the screen properly or put the correct amount of pressure on the squeegee, but overall, it went pretty well.
